What your blood pressure is telling you at 38
Almost every patient I see with hypertension found out by accident. A pre-employment screening. An insurance form. A bad headache that turned out to be something else entirely. That is the nature of the condition: it does almost nothing to announce itself until it has already been doing damage for years. No sharp pain, no obvious symptom, just a number quietly climbing on a cuff nobody thought to check. In Nigeria, the numbers are worse than most people assume. Roughly one in three adults is living with high blood pressure, and a large share of them don't know it. The ones who do know often stop taking medication once they feel "fine" — which is exactly the trap, because feeling fine was never the test. Here is what the two numbers actually mean. The top number, systolic, is the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. The bottom number, diastolic, is the pressure between beats, when your heart is resting. Anything consistently above 130/80 deserves attention. Above 140/90, it's no longer a "keep an eye on it" conversation. What actually moves the numbers isn't dramatic. Salt reduction matters more than most people expect — a lot of it hidden in seasoning cubes and processed food, not the salt shaker. Regular movement, even thirty minutes a few times a week, has a measurable effect within weeks. Sleep and stress matter more than either gets credit for. And when lifestyle isn't enough on its own, there's no shame in medication — the shame is in the number nobody checked. This is why every True Paddle edition opens with a health check, not as a gimmick, but because a room full of people who've decided their body is worth investing in is exactly the room that should know its numbers. We've had members find out for the first time on a Saturday afternoon, racket still in hand. That's the whole point of building it this way.
